SPE | Drilling Over 20 Wells into Bad Rock - Learning from Failure

Abstract: During a development campaign of the Duvernay in Shell's Fox Creek area, 23 of 36 wells performed below the initial P90 expectation. The lookback required a culture of openly addressing failure. Uncertainty about the reason for underperformance and its predictability remain. Early indicators to identify the area of underperformance are discussed for three technical aspects, including an unconventional impact of high water cut on condensate production. This experience demonstrates the value of data. In hindsight, pace of development did not allow to react to learnings. Speaker Bio: Daniel Yang is Petroleum Advisor at Shell Canada. Holding a PhD in Geophysics from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, he dedicated 15 years of his oil-industry career to Enhanced Oil Recovery methods, focusing on thermal recovery and originating from 10 years of research in geothermal energy. Since 2015, he concentrates on tight oil and gas reservoirs. Daniel worked at Shell International, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. and Laricina Energy Ltd. He holds two patents, is recognized as Subject Matter Expert in Shell, has over 20 publications, received a SPE Best Paper Award in 2014, was a guest lecturer at universities in Germany, U.S.A. and Canada, and SPE Distinguished Lecturer in 2016/17.
